New York Mets Next Manager Odds: Is Brad Ausmus the New Favorite?

The Mets finally have a General Manager in Billy Eppler. That means all eyes turn to the managerial search, and oddsmakers have long had their eyes on two Eppler connections for the job.

Former Angels’ manager and Eppler hire Brad Ausmus was given +900 odds, or a 10% chance to be named the next Mets manager in October. That put Ausmus fifth on the market. While there has been no odds update, Ausmus would likely be considered the second favorite at this moment by oddsmakers.

New York Mets Next Manager Odds: Who Should Be Favored?

Rumors of a Beltran return have been shut down, Bob Melvin was hired in San Diego, and Ausmus’ connection to Eppler would certainly have him leapfrog Buck Showalter. However, there remains one more likely candidate.

The Billy Eppler Connection

Former Yankees’ special assistant and third base coach Joe Espada is the likely favorite to land the job. Espada began the cycle as the favorite but quickly fell behind Carlos Beltran. Last we saw, Espada was given +500 odds, or an implied 16.7% chance to land the job. Given his connection to Eppler and how soundly the idea of Beltran was shut down, it would appear that if odds were updated, Espada would be the clear overwhelming favorite to land the job.

Things are chaotic in Mets land. They just hired a new GM, they just lost Noah Syndergaard, and a lockout is likely coming in two weeks. That means the Mets may be scrambling to make signings and hiring so they aren’t behind in the market with the transaction freeze coming. That includes a manager hire.

So, that means people with a connection to Eppler makes the most sense. Given the already strong connection to Espada and Ausmus prior to Eppler’s hire, the two of them make the most sense, Espada in particular.
