MLB Wins Leader Odds: Gerrit Cole Favored to Lead the League

Wins is such an overrated stat. I know, in an article writing about MLB wins leader odds I probably shouldn't say that but if there were a way to bet on the ERA leader or WHIP leader, believe me, I would be all over it.

Anyway, last year the leader in wins was Julio Urias. He went 20-3 with a 2.96 ERA for the Dodgers who won 106 games. Will he repeat in 2022 or will someone else take the crown? Here's what the oddsmakers think for who will lead the league in wins:

Gerrit Cole +650 (Bet $100 to win $650)

With 16 wins last year, Gerrit Cole led the American League. In 2019, he was a 20 game winner in Houston and he's someone who goes deep into games which usually translates to more wins. Unlike the Cy Young, wins is a team stat. You need to be on a good team in order to win a lot of games and my one thought here is how the Yankees haven't taken a step forward this offseason.

The Blue Jays, Rays, and Red Sox all got better and were aggressive, while the Yankees took a much more conservative approach. I don't love Cole as a bet here for that reason alone. If the team takes a step back, his win/loss record will likely suffer.

Walker Buehler +750 (Bet $100 to win $750)

Now, this is a bet that I like a lot. The Dodgers won 106 games last year and added Freddie Freeman to their lineup. They should sleepwalk to a division title and are considered a World Series favorite as well. If you can pencil them in for 100 wins, which I think you can, then you will see guys like Urias and Walker Buehler rack up wins.

Last year, he pitched to a 2.47 ERA and won 16 games. The 16 was a career-high but this is more of a bet of him taking a step forward in that department. He will certainly have the run support with the likes of Freeman, Mookie Betts, Max Mncy Will Smith, etc.

Max Scherzer +800 (Bet $100 to win $800)

I am fading Mets pitchers in the wins conversation. Jacob deGrom for as great as he is, has a career high of 15 wins in his career. He combined for 22 wins in 2018 and 2019, his two Cy Young seasons. I know the Mets lineup got better with the likes of Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha, etc. but this is believing it when I see it territory.

If you want to sprinkle on Max Scherzer or Jacob deGrom for Cy Young, sure but I would not advise placing a wager on either Scherzer or Jacob deGrom to lead the league in wins.
