MLB Strikeout Leader Odds: Jacob deGrom is the Best Bet

I don't think it's unfair to say that Jacob deGrom is the best pitcher in baseball. Sure, Gerrit Cole, Max Scherzer, Zack Wheeler, and others are high-level elite pitchers but what deGrom has done since 2018 has been truly special.

When looking at the MLB Strikeout Leader odds, somehow, Jacob deGrom isn't the favorite. Should he be even coming off the injury? I think so but let's take a look at what the oddsmakers say.

MLB Strikeout Leader Odds

Gerrit Cole+475
Jacob deGrom+500
Max Scherzer+700
Robbie Ray+900
Corbin Burns+1100
Shane Bieber+1200
Zack Wheeler+1200
Justin Verlander+1300

Gerrit Cole +475 (Bet $100 to win $475)

Gerrit Cole is a strikeout machine. In 2019 he led the league in strikeouts with 326 while finishing second in the Cy Young race. His strikeout per nine numbers have been 12 or better in three of the past four seasons. Last season in 30 starts he finished with 243 which was third in the league trailing Zack Wheeler and Robbie Ray.

If he pitches to his 8.1 strikeouts per start and starts two or three more games then that would put him on pace for 259 over 32 starts which should give him the most in the league. He's not a bad choice, even as a chalk favorite, but the number two guy on this list is the obvious bet to me.

Jacob deGrom +500 (Bet $100 to win $500)

In 2019 and 2020, Jacob deGrom was leading the National League in strikeouts. He's finished top three in Cy Young voting the past three years he was healthy with two wins under his belt. Before the injury last year, he was likely on his way to another one pitching to a 1.08 ERA over 15 starts.

deGrom had 146 punchouts in those 15 starts so if you were to give him another 15 starts over the second half of the season, that would put him on track for 292 strikeouts which would've been 44 more than Robbie Ray. If deGrom is healthy, which he seems to be by how he looks in Spring Training, there is no reason to believe that he can't lead all of baseball again in 2022.
