Mets World Series Odds: How Does Jacob deGrom's Injury Affect New York's Odds?
News broke Friday afternoon that New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom will miss his opening day start and at least the early stages of the 2022 season. The injury is to his throwing shoulder as X-Rays showed a stress reaction in his right scapula. As a fan of baseball and what Jacob deGrom is capable of every time he steps out on the mound let's hope he makes a quick recovery and returns to form sooner than later!
Before the news of the injury, the Mets odds to win the World Series were +1000. After the news of Jacob deGrom's shoulder injury, we saw the Mets World Series odds dip to +1200. Luckily for the Mets, they brought in arguably the best pitcher in baseball over the last decade Max Scherzer.
Max Scherzer finished third last season in NL Cy Young votes. He was traded to the Dodgers midseason and was dominant after joining LA. He pitched in 11 games going 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 68 innings he gave up just 15 earned runs and 89 strikeouts. The Mets signed the three-time Cy Young Award winner this offseason to a three-year deal worth $130 million. The 37-year-old future Hall of Famer will be a dominant force again this season back in the NL East where he spent seven seasons with the Nationals.
The Mets didn't envision Scherzer as an insurance policy but that's just what he has become for their World Series hopes in 2022. With Jacob deGrom set to miss a significant amount of time, the Mets are extremely fortunate to have Max Scherzer.
Reports are that deGrom will be reevaluated in a month's time. He will be shut down for an entire month before he starts throwing again. Then the Mets will take a look at the area again and re-evaluate where he is and what the right course of action is. Jacob deGrom's season isn't over but it's not off to a great start.
