It hadn’t been the dream opening to a season for Reid Detmers. The Angels’ young lefty wasn’t even on the oddsmakers’ radars due to his 5.32 ERA over his first 5 starts. However, a no-hitter changes things.

Oddsmakers are now giving Detmers +4000 odds to win the AL Cy Young. That puts him tied for 13th in the American League with Michael Kopech and reigning Cy Young award winner Robbie Ray. He’s still far off from the top of the market, with Justin Verlander, +550, Kevin Gausman, +650, Gerrit Cole, and Dylan Cease, both +750, running away from the field early season.

Something similar happened earlier in the season with Tylor Megill. After he started a combined no-hitter, he appeared on the NL Cy Young market at +3500. So, it’s clear that oddsmakers believe that a no-hitter is a massive boost to even a struggling pitcher's Cy Young resume.

Throwing a no-hitter is one of the greatest achievements in baseball history. Yet, the pitchers who do it rarely win Cy Youngs. Since the award was introduced in 1956, only 6 times has a Cy Young winner also thrown a no-hitter. Sandy Koufax did it in 1963 and 1965, Mike Scott in 1986, Justin Verlander in 2011 and 2017, and Clayton Kershaw in 2014. So, while this moment is a phenomenal one for Detmers, there’s a reason oddsmakers are still skeptical of his chances of joining the elite.
