Shohei Ohtani Trade Odds: Sportsbooks Name the San Diego Padres As Massive Favorites to Land Shohei Ohtani
Could the reigning AL MVP be on the move? The Angels aren’t competing this year, and Shohei Ohtani has only one year left on his contract. So, sportsbooks are thinking about where Ohtani may end up next, and perhaps as soon as MLB trade deadline day. The Angels are out of contention. Meanwhile, Ohtani is in the MVP race again with Aaron Judge. Now might be the best time for the Angels to get a blockbuster package for their superstar. Here is a breakdown of the latest Shohei Ohtani news and Shohei Ohtani trade odds, via bookies.com.
Shohei Ohtani Trade Odds
Odds | Team | Implied chance |
---|---|---|
-115 | Los Angeles Angels | 53.5% |
+500 | San Diego Padres | 16.7% |
+900 | St. Louis Cardinals | 10% |
+1000 | New York Mets | 9.1% |
+1000 | The Field | 9.1% |
+1100 | New York Yankees | 8.3% |
+1200 | Milwaukee Brewers | 7.7% |
+1200 | Atlanta Braves | 7.7% |
+1400 | Toronto Blue Jays | 6.7% |
The expectation is still that Ohtani will remain with the Angels after the trade deadline in 6 days. They’re given -115 odds, or an implied 53.5% chance to retain their superstar. However, there is a strong market if they do decide it’s time to cash in on Ohtani and rebuild. The Los Angeles Angels are now open to trading generational superstar Shohei Ohtani after he told them he'll not resign as a free agent after 2023. Ohtani has made it clear to Angels ownership that he wants to be on a team that will compete for a championship, and it would be prudent for the organization to field trade calls for the superstar.
The Angels are reportedly at the minimum, listening on Ohtani. That means a deal is technically possible. Sportsbooks do believe he’s more likely than not to remain with the Angels, but if he’s on the move in the next few days, it’s the Padres to look out for. The books have them far ahead of everyone else in this race. Ohtani originally wanted to stay on the country's West coast, so the Padres fit that perfectly for him. They also provide the Angels with a strong farm system to pick from.
If Ohtani is moved, the San Diego Padres are the overwhelming favorites at +500, or an implied 16.7% chance. The next best odds are given to the St. Louis Cardinals at +900, or an implied 10% chance. Those are the only two teams given at least a 10% chance to make a deal. The Cardinals are in on Juan Soto, as are the Padres but the Cardinals boast the second-best farm system in MLB right now.
The key here seems to be a team that is in contention, unlike the market for Juan Soto, which is filled with teams who aren’t contending this year like the Rangers. Sportsbooks clearly believe that if Ohtani is going to move it’ll be to a contender. All seven teams on the market for Ohtani are currently in a playoff spot.
