2022 AL Cy Young Race: Justin Verlander Given 57% Chance of Winning AL Cy Young Award

After six shutout innings last night, sportsbooks are ready to declare Justin Verlander the clear favorite to win the American League Cy Young award. The 39-year-old has run away from his competition. Let's dive into the MLB AL Cy Young odds.

MLB AL Cy Young Race Odds Breakdown

Verlander is now given -130 odds, or an implied 56.5% chance to win the AL Cy Young. Only two other pitchers are in the race. Shane McClanahan is given +260 odds, or an implied 27.8% chance to take home the award. Meanwhile, Dylan Cease is given +480 odds, or an implied 17.2% chance.

Verlander is aiming to become the oldest pitcher to ever win the AL Cy Young award. Gaylord Perry, 40, and Roger Clemens, 42, both won the NL Cy Young awards. Verlander would also become the first Astros pitcher to win two Cy Young awards, Mike Scott, Roger Clemens, and Dallas Keuchel all won it once.

Odds can be deceiving. Justin Verlander may seem like the runaway favorite now from these MLB AL Cy Young odds, but that doesn’t mean he’s a lock. At this point last year Lance Lynn was given -170 odds to win the Cy Young, while eventual winner Robbie Ray had +3000 odds. Verlander has earned his place as the favorite to take home the award, but it only takes a few bad starts for everything to change.
