The greatest offseason in NBA history continued last night as Russell Westbrook was traded from Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul, first-round picks in 2024 and 2026, and pick swaps in 2021 and 2025.
The 30-year old's move to Houston has been a bone to their NBA Championship chances according to the sportsbooks. The Rockets' title odds have been smashed in from a best price of +1400 earlier this week to as short as +700. That shortening of odds has seen them leapfrog Golden State Warriors and get very close to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Chris Paul's move from Houston was inevitable given reports of his deteriorating relationship with James Harden, so it's no surprise that the Rockets acted quickly to secure Westbrook after the Paul George trade from OKC to the Clippers signalled that Oklahoma were in rebuild mode.
It's going to be interesting to see Westbrook and Harden reunite and questions have been asked about whether Westbrook would be happy letting The Beard being the primary ball-handler. The oddsmakers clearly think it can work however and that Westbrook is a major upgrade on Paul.
