LeBron James To Retire After the Season? Oddsmakers Think There’s a Chance
LeBron James has seen some struggles since signing with the Lakers. Injuries have started to pile up, he requires rest days for his body, and he’s seen his off-the-court career begin to take off. So, will this be the last year of James’ illustrious career? Oddsmakers think there’s a real chance.
LeBron James Retirement Odds
LeBron James is given +250 odds to retire at the end of the season. That’s an implied 28.6% chance that this will be the last year of his career. Now, while those odds may not seem great, they are.
To give an idea, the odds that LeBron retires are better than Durant’s to win the MVP this year, better than any candidate has to win the 2024 presidential election, and better than any actor has to be the next James Bond.
Could LeBron Retire at the Same Time as Another All-Time Great?
Oddly enough, James’ odds to retire are identical to Bill Belichick’s odds to retire. That’s right, both LeBron and Belichick are given the same +250 odds to retire after their current season. Could the NBA and NFL lose two goats in one year? Oddsmakers don’t think it’s likely, but there is a very real chance.
LeBron James has one more year on his contract after this one. His son, Bronny James, is set to enter the NBA Draft in 2023, the first high school kids will be eligible to enter since 2005. It’s hard to see LeBron retiring and leaving both money and the opportunity to play with his son on the table. So, while his age and body say it may be time, it doesn’t seem likely that LeBron will choose to retire quite yet.
