NBA Championship Odds: Brooklyn Nets Still NBA Title Favorites Despite 9-Game Losing Streak

NBA Championship Odds: Brooklyn Nets Still NBA Title Favorites Despite 9-Game Losing Streak
Oddsmakers are stubborn in basketball. Last year they refused to move off of the Los Angeles Lakers as favorites to win it all. Even as they fell out of a playoff spot and into the play-in tournament, the Lakers were still the favorites to win the West and virtually tied with the Nets to win the NBA Title. This year, they’re doing the same thing with the Nets.
Despite an NBA long 9-game losing streak that has dropped them into a play-in spot, the Nets are still the favorites to win the NBA Title. Brooklyn is given +400 odds, or an implied 20% chance to overcome this and win it all. This is a testament to the immense amount of talent the team has when they’re healthy.
However, with every loss, the teams in the West close in on them. The Golden State Warriors have moved to +460, or an implied 17.9% chance to take home the title. The Phoenix Suns are right on their tail at +500, or an implied 16.7% chance. The Milwaukee Bucks aren’t too far behind either at +650 or an implied 13.3% chance.
Excuses will abound for the Nets. Kyrie Irving can’t play at home, Kevin Durant is hurt, James Harden trade rumors are ruining the chemistry. When it comes down to it though, injuries are a part of the game, Kyrie Irving is doing this to himself, and the Nets are the ones who traded their best depth for Harden. Just like the Lakers last year, when you go all-in on superstars you have to hope those stars are actually capable of carrying the team they lead. If anything stops them, usually injuries as it was for the Nets and Lakers last year, it’s not an excuse it’s reality.
