NBA Rumors: Will New NBA TV Deal Exceed $70 Billion?

The NBA is reportedly looking for a major raise when their TV deal comes due. After the NFL made history with the first-ever $100 billion TV deal, the NBA is looking to follow suit. While sportsbooks don’t expect it to reach those heights, they do expect it to top $70 billion, nearly tripling their previous $24 billion deal.

Sportsbooks are giving -140 odds, or an implied 58.3% chance to top $70 billion. They’re given EVEN odds, or an implied 50% to fall short of the market. These are the same odds given to Los Angeles Angles pitcher Shohei Ohtani to top $500 million on his next contract, becoming the first to do so in American sports history.

To put this into perspective, the books believe there’s a better chance that Kanye West will run for president than there is that the NBA deal will top $70 billion. So, while they do believe it’ll happen, it’s far from a guarantee.

The NBA has quickly become one of the most-watched events in the United States. However, 2022 wasn’t a great year. The NBA was not in the top 100 most-viewed programs in the US. It was behind the NFL, College Football, the World Cup, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby, and College Basketball.

For the NBA to get to the mark they want of $75 billion, this would mean convincing people that their viewership will continue to rise. It’s certainly possible, and maybe likely, but it isn’t a slam dunk just yet.
