NBA Coach of the Year Odds: Joe Mazzula the Favorite to Take Home Coach of the Year Award

When the Boston Celtics fired Ime Udoka there were questions about whether or not Joe Mazzula would be able to keep the team on track. That hasn’t been an issue, as Boston has the NBA’s best record. As a result, the books believe that the first-time head coach is the clear favorite to take home the Coach of the Year honors.

NBA Coach of the Year Odds

CoachOddsImplied chance
Joe Mazzula+22530.8%
Mike Brown+37521.1%
Michael Malone+42519%
Taylor Jenkins+50016.7%
Jacque Vaughn+55015.4%
Willie Green+12007.7%
JB Bickerstaff+20004.8%

Mazzula is given +225 odds or an implied 30.8% chance to win the award. He’d be the first rookie head coach to win the award since Tom Thibodeaux won it in 2010. Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown isn’t far behind though at +375 or an implied 21.1% chance.

In fact, five head coaches in total have at least a 15% chance to win the award. Including Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone +425, Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins +500, and Brooklyn Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn +550.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green and Cleveland Cavaliers head coach JB Bickerstaff are on the periphery right now. With Green given +1200 odds or an implied 7.7% chance, and Bickerstaff given +2000 odds or an implied 4.8% chance.

Mazzula and Brown at the top of the market make sense. Mazzula’s team has the best record in the league and Brown’s team is the best story in the league. Halfway through the season, it’s hard to see which way the voters would turn. After all, there’s still a chance the Kings fall off, they’re only 3.5 games up on a play-in spot. So Mazzula being favored here is the most logical choice. But if things continue this way for Sacramento I’d be surprised if Brown doesn’t jump Mazzula in the end.
