The Dallas Mavericks pulled off a shocker by completing a trade for Kyrie Irving yesterday. Now armed with a second star, the Mavericks are now among the favorites to win the NBA Championship. But how long will this partnership last?

Kyrie Irving to Sign Extension Odds

Sportsbooks are giving the Mavericks -140 odds or an implied 58.3% chance to re-sign Kyrie Irving. Normally that’d be a strong mark, but the Mavs are also given EVEN odds or an implied 50% chance of losing Irving in free agency.

With Irving in the fold the Mavericks are now given +1600 odds or an implied 5.9% chance to win the NBA Championship. That’s eighth on the market but fifth in the West behind the Denver Nuggets at +800, the Golden State Warriors at +1200, the Memphis Grizzlies at +1200, and the Los Angeles Clippers at +1400.

Kyrie Irving has signed an extension with a team just once in his career. He re-signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. He didn’t sign an extension with the Boston Celtics, he was traded by the Brooklyn Nets when extension talks broke down, and now he’s with the Mavericks.

Perhaps they only make this deal if they feel comfortable re-signing the All-Star guard, but it could just be that the Mavericks are going for it this season. For now, the sportsbooks think an extension is more likely than not, but that could change at any time.
