Gardner-Webb is also given a decent shot to win the league after an 11-5 conference season. Oddsmakers give the Runnin’ Bulldogs +500 odds, or a 16.7% chance to surprise. In a surprising move UNC Asheville, the 5th seed in the tournament is given +750 odds, or an implied 11.8% chance. Winthrop is looking for a 3rd straight Big South title. The last two years weren’t even competitive. In 2021, they won their tournament games by an average of 26 points. In 2020, it was by an average of 19 points. It’s a shock they aren’t the favorites this year, even if Longwood had a better regular season. That’s especially true since Longwood has never made it to the NCAA tournament. This league is owned by Winthrop, in the last 8 years, they’ve been in the finals 6 times going 3-3. It’s hard to bet against domination like that.
