Big East Tournament Update

Of the seven games played in the Big East Tournament so far, only one has featured a lower seed winning. That came in Wednesday's First Round when 9-seed Butler knocked off 8-seed Xavier in overtime. Although the Bulldogs gave 1-seed Providence a run in yesterday's Quarterfinals, their run was ended courtesy of the regular-season champion Friars.

Thursday's action also saw 4-seed Creighton withstand a late charge by Marquette before answering with a run of their own to run away with the win. Despite many analysts viewing Shaka Smart and Marquette highly, the Bluejays continued to exceed expectations by advancing to the Semifinals.

In Thursday's primetime action, the favorite amongst the Big East Tournament odds was pushed to the limit. 2-seed Villanova ultimately survived St. John's to advance. The nightcap that followed saw 3-seed UConn put on a defensive clinic to oust 6-seed Seton Hall. After a fun day of basketball at MSG, the top four seeds in the conference standings now also represent the semifinalists in the tournament. The sections below offer a closer look at the odds for each remaining team including how they compare to the pre-tournament betting market.

Big East Tournament Betting Odds

Villanova Wildcats

Odds: +120 (Bet $100 to Win $120)

After barely escaping yesterday's Quarterfinal Round victorious, perhaps Villanova is not looking to be as strong of a college basketball betting favorite as some felt they were before the Big East Tournament began. The current +120 price on the Wildcats is down 30 cents from pre-tournament outright odds of +150. Of course, with four tournament titles in the last six years, Jay Wright's squad has far more recent success than any of the other three semifinalists.

Providence Friars

Odds: +280 (Bet $100 to Win $280)

In a sense, Providence probably caught a break by getting to play Butler in the Quarterfinals as opposed to Xavier. Any and all breaks are certainly welcomed this time of year. Ed Cooley's squad has seen their Big East Tournament odds drop from +425 before play began to +280. While winning the regular-season title was a brand new occurrence for the Friars, they have found success in the Big Apple as recently as 2014. Despite being the top seed, Providence is only the third-ranked semifinalist based on KenPom's overall efficiency ratings.

UConn Huskies

Odds: +300 (Bet $100 to Win $300)

Down the stretch of the regular season, UConn coach Danny Hurley was adamant that improving on the defensive end would be key to the Huskies winning the Big East Tournament. Well, his team appeared to have gotten the message. Connecticut locked down Seton Hall in yesterday's Quarterfinal matchup. Upon reaching the Semifinals, UConn's Big East Tournament betting odds dropped 30 cents from a pre-tournament price of +330. With two veteran guards in R.J. Cole and Tyrese Martin and a rebounding force in Adama Sanogo, the Huskies are certainly dangerous.

Creighton Bluejays

Odds: +550 (Bet $100 to Win $550)

The lowest remaining seed in the Big East Tournament bracket is fittingly the longshot on the betting board. Many thought that the Bluejays would be bounced by Marquette yesterday. After enduring that challenge, Greg McDermott's team now finds itself pitted against three other semifinalists who are all over 20 spots higher in the KenPom ratings. Then again, the Jays have played in the tournament championship game twice in the last four seasons including last year. Creighton always seems to deliver under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.
