The Filipino senator will now face Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas after a retinal tear in Errol Spence’s left eye was discovered during a pre-fight medical exam, announced Tuesday. The exam was conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and took place Monday. Spence will undergo surgery Wednesday in Dallas.
Pacquiao is 42 years old; he defeated Keith Thurman to win the WBA title in July 2019 but steps into the ring for the first time since. Yordenis Ugas holds the title that was taken from Pacquiao by the WBA, and he will step in to replace Spence Jr.
Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) is one of the greatest fighters of this generation. However, the future Hall of Famer was attempting to score one of the best over-40 victories in boxing history against Errol Spence Jr. as he was the underdog.
Now with his new opponent Ugas named, Manny Pacman is the heavy favorite.
Oddsmakers have only released odds at a few sportsbooks so far but open up with giving Pacquiao -300, or an implied 75% chance to win this title bout. Ugas is given +240, or an implied 29.4% chance to win.
Since the fight was announced on Twitter just over 20 hours ago there has been a 50% split by bettors of who they are backing to win.
Ugas (26-4, 12 KOs) is 35 years old; he took home the bronze medal for Cuba at the 2008 Olympic Games. In his only title shot, he lost in a controversial split decision to Shawn Porter in 2019. He has won 11 of his last 12 fights. Manny Pacquiao provides the biggest test of his career. Ugas was scheduled to defend his WBA super-welterweight title against Fabian Maidana in the featured undercard bout of the night, but Maidana suffered an injury in sparring Monday and had already withdrawn from the Ugas fight.
Ugas defeated Abel Ramos on September 6, 2020, in Los Angeles to win a vacant WBA welterweight title. However, on January 29, without any notice to Pacquiao, the WBA super champion since beating Keith Thurman in 2019, the WBA deemed Pacquiao its champion in recess. The title was stripped from him due to inactivity. As a result, they gave Ugas the super champion designation at the time.
For Pacquiao, a win over Ugas wouldn’t necessarily mean a fight with Spence would be next. The Senator is preparing for a May presidential run in the Philippines against incumbent Rodrigo Duterte, meaning his next fight could be his last.
