If you follow heavyweight boxing or just boxing in general, you know who Anthony Joshua is. For a while, Joshua was considered to be the best heavyweight boxer in the world.
Joshua started his professional boxing career with 22 straight wins following his super-heavyweight gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It looked like he was headed toward an eventual showdown with another undefeated heavyweight, Deontay Wilder, but his career took a major step back in 2019 thanks to the first loss of his career.
Joshua, following 22 straight wins, took on a relatively unknown fighter in Mexico’s Andy Ruiz Jr. at 32-1, Ruiz had the talent, but he didn’t have the recognition that Joshua did. During their eventual 2019 fight, Ruiz took the fight to Joshua, punishing him with heavy hands and eventually beating him by TKO in the 7th round.
Joshua has fought twice since and won both matches. He defeated Ruiz in the rematch and then knocked out Kubrat Pulev. He’s trying to be next in line to take on Tyson Fury, but another loss, this time to Usyk, may damage those chances.
Oleksandr Usyk is an Olympic gold medallist and an unbeaten fighter, but he hasn’t gotten the same recognition as the top of the heavyweight division, like Joshua, Fury and Wilder.
But, Joshua knows better than to take a lesser-known fighter for anything less than a real challenge. Usyk also won gold at the 2012 London Olympics. Since then, he’s fought 18 times and won each time he’s stepped into the ring.
13 of Usyk’s 18 wins have come by knockout. He’s ranked as one of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and has only recently made the jump up to heavyweight. Usyk was the undisputed cruiserweight champion in 2018, prior to making the decision to go up to heavyweight.
Since then, Usyk has wins over Derek Chisora and Chazz Witherspoon.
