Yesterday we got the announcement that Canelo Alvarez was set to face Callum Smith for the WBA Super World Super Middleweight title on Saturday, 19 December in front of a packed Texas crowd.
This will be the first and only time that Canelo steps into the ring in 2020, and by the time of his ring walk it will be over one year since the Mexican fought.
Saul Alvarez was immediately installed as favorite with the books. The Mexican superstar is a -400 favorite, which is unsurprising given his starstudded resume. At 53-1-2 there is no doubt that Canelo is the biggest name in boxing, and arguably the greatest pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
His challenger, the British boxer, Callum Smith, is a +300 outsider to win the fight. However, that price isn't huge, in part because of Smith's skill. Smith is regarded as the best boxer in the Smith family, who have been a key part of British boxing over the past few years. Indeed, Canelo defeated his brother Liam in 2017, with a knockout in the ninth round.
