A pair of welterweights will go at it Saturday night in Las Vegas, as Keith Thurman makes his long-awaited return to the ring following a 2019 loss to Manny Pacquiao; the first of his career. On the opposite side, Mario Barrios comes into following the first loss of his career, a June defeat at the hands of Gervonta Davis as he lost his WBA super lightweight title after two successful defenses.

Keith Thurman (29-1-1)

Simply put, Thurman has been fighting at an elite level for a long time. Since winning the WBA belt back in 2013, Thurman successfully defended the belt a staggering eight times before running into Pacquiao in 2019. 

Knocking off the likes of Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, and Josesito Lopez along the way, Thurman’s fight record is a who's who of the division (and sport) and shouldn’t be discounted in the slightest. Reportedly having come into this camp at 170+ pounds, many within the sport are interested to see what Thurman looks like Saturday after what will be a nearly 25lb weight cut.

Mario Barrios (26-1)

For the 26-year-old Barrios, Saturday will also mark his first time in the ring following the first loss of his career. In a June defense of his own super lightweight title, Barrios looked solid over the first 6-7 rounds, before Davis started picking up apart scoring several knockdowns before ultimately finishing him the 11th round. 

Heading into this one, in addition to his youth, Barrios has a 3” height and reach advantage over Thurman, two facets of his game he’ll need to capitalize on to take down the veteran; despite any alleged ring rust.

The odds for this one opened in early January with Thurman the favorite (-180) and Barrios the underdog (+140), and the action has been largely split since.
