In what was supposed to be a trilogy fight between current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski and the #1 contender Max Holloway, an injury to Holloway postponed that matchup. In its place steps another great fight, however, as the #1 contender at welterweight Colby Covington steps into the octagon to face fan-favorite Jorge Masvidal.
For the UFC, Saturday will mark the third pay-per-view event of the year, and set up a jam-packed spring of great fights.
The quality action doesn’t just start in the main event Saturday, however, as Edson Barboza and Bryce Mitchell precede a co-main event of Rafael dos Anjos vs. (the recently announced) Renato Moicano. Let’s take a closer look at Saturday’s main event, however, diving into both fighters’ profiles as well as where the action has gone as fight night approaches.

Colby Covington (16-3-0)
Fighting out of Miami, FL, “Chaos” Covington has quietly amassed quite the hit list in his time with the UFC. Since joining in 2014, Covington has wins over the likes of Rafael dos Anjos, Robbie Lawler, and most recently Tyron Woodley. The last time we saw him in the octagon was his second loss in two years to Kamaru Usman, both for the title, and both of which went to the 5th round (TKO & decision).
With a takedown average of 4.1 per 15 minutes inside the octagon, the former Division I wrestler’s primary advantage on Saturday will likely come on the ground. In nearly all other statistics, he is within decimals of Masvidal.
Jorge Masvidal (31-15-0)
Like Covington, Masvidal’s last two losses, which just happened to be his last two fights, both have come against Usman. A five-round division loss in the summer of 2020, followed by a 2nd round KO in spring of 2021. Even still, however, Masvidal’s hit list is a roster of killers, with TKO/KO wins over Nate Diaz, Darren Till, and Donald Cerrone.
Despite the long odds, Masvidal has a slide edge in striking heading into Saturday, with 4.22 (vs. 4.14) strikes landed per minute, 55.11% (vs. 50.46%) of which are accurate. And while he does trail significantly in takedown averages, his accuracy is 13% higher at 59.32% and submissions more than double at .35.
