When: May 28, 2022, 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY
Before the main event between Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero goes off on Showtime PPV this Saturday, a co-main bout between two middleweight veterans will tee things off. Erislandy Lara will look to revive his storied Hall of Fame career, as the Cuban National is nearing the end of it at 39 years of age. His opponent, Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan is a journeyman in the division, making what will be his first challenge for a WBA belt.
Let’s take a closer look at both fighters and where the money is flowing ahead of Saturday’s fight night in Brooklyn.

Erislandy Lara (28-3, 16 KOs)
Turning professional in 2008, Lara is a legend in the middleweight ranks. The current holder of the WBA (regular) middleweight title, Lara has held the belt since May 2021. He has also held various WBA light-middleweight titles since 2014, as well as the IBO light-middleweight title since 2015, losing it from a lack of action in 2021.
Over his past three fights, Lara has won all three, with two ending via KO/TKO in the second round or prior. A knockout specialist, Lara won his last fight (vs. Thomas LaManna) in the very first round at just 1:20. Looking for one final run in his career, many are predicting a similar fate vs. Sullivan this Saturday.
Gary O'Sullivan (31-4, 21 KOs)
“Spike” Sullivan also turned professional in 2008, winning the vacant Irish middleweight title in 2009 before moving on to take the WBO International middleweight title three years later. While he has more professional fights than Lara, the knock against Spike is his record against quality opponents.
In all four instances, Spike lost four straight including taking beatings from Chris Eubank Jr. David Lemieux, Billy Jo Saunders, and just in January 2020, Jaime Munguia. Three of those losses have come inside the distance, this is likely O’Sullivan’s last chance at a decent size payday, and an opportunity that was too sweet to pass up despite the long odds of success.
Erislandy Lara vs Gary O'Sullivan Odds
Lara opened up the betting window listed as a -1667 favorite, as O’Sullivan game in as a +1200 underdog. Since both numbers have been bet into, the market has largely agreed with oddsmakers as Lara has swelled to a -1800 betting favorite. As for the underdog, however, O'Sullivan is down to a +950 favorite, signaling some belief that the underdog has a puncher's chance.
It is also worth noting that Lara to win by KO, TKO, or DQ is listed as -215, a far cry from the juicy odds of -1800. For “Spike” Sullivan to win by the same fate, bettors would get a favorable +1400.
