ALEXANDER VOLKANOVSKI (24-1-0)
The number-two pound-for-pound fighter in the world steps into the cage in the co-main event on Saturday. Volkanovski is an impressive 11-0 in the UFC octagon and has successfully defended his title three times since yanking it away from Holloway in 2019. The Australian-born brawler is coming off of an impressive victory over Chan Sung Jung in April. As I mentioned in the intro, there’s a huge skill gap in the division and Alexander the Great proved it that night. He took a skilled fighter in the Korean Zombie and made him look like an amateur. Volkanovski outstruck the challenger 138-48, won the takedown battle 4-0, and eventually finished him with a knockout 45 seconds into the fourth round.
The champ comes in averaging 6.63 significant strikes per minute and he’s landing at a 57% success rate. He’s absorbing just 3.32 per minute while defending 70% of opposing takedowns. The Aussie is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and averages 1.95 takedowns landed per 15 minutes.Â
MAX HOLLOWAY (23-6-0)
Holloway fought his way back into contention for the belt after dropping consecutive fights to Volkanovski a couple of years ago. And he did it in a dominant fashion. Holloway set the record for most significant strikes in a fight (445) against Calvin Kattar in his return to the octagon and notched a decision victory. Absolutely insane output from the American. And how did he follow that up? By setting the fifth-highest output in a fight. Holloway landed 230 significant strikes in a thrilling decision victory with Yair Rodriguez. He also landed three takedowns in the win that put him back in the running for another title shot.Â
Blessed Max Holloway comes into this fight as arguably the best boxer in the promotion, landing 7.38 significant strikes per minute at a 47% clip.
