Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz Odds: Chimaev Given 92% Chance to Defeat Diaz at UFC 279

UFC 279 Start Time, Where to Watch, and Odds

When: September 10

Time: 10:00 PM EDT

Where: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV

Where to Watch: ESPN+ Pay-Per-View

Nate Diaz finally got his wish in the remaining fight of his UFC contract to be scheduled, albeit against one of the most feared fighters currently under the UFC banner in Khmzat Chimaev. Confirmed this afternoon by ESPN.com and UFC executive Hunter Campbell, Chimaev has already made a statement saying he’s going to “handle Nate Diaz’s funeral.”

And I believe him.

Let’s take a closer look at both fighters and how things might shake out in Las Vegas in two months.

Nate Diaz (21-13-0)

A true OG of the UFC, Nate Diaz joined the UFC via The Ultimate Fighter in 2007 and has fought a long list of killers in the game across multiple eras. Recently, however, Diaz has struggled to maintain the same form he had for so long, as he comes into this fight having lost three of his past four fights.

Statistically, Diaz’s metrics have fallen off with his loss, as he comes into this fight averaging 4.51 significant strikes landed per minute, and an accuracy clip of just 45%. He’ll also look noticeably smaller in this fight, as he’s a more natural 170 while his opponent walks around near 200 pounds.

Khamzat Chimaev (11-0-0)

Making his UFC debut in the summer of 2020, Chimaev made light work of everyone put in front of him in the lead-up to UFC 273 in April, with all four fights prior ending inside of two rounds and three in the very first. That’s when he ran into Gilbert Burns, who put a big gamble on facing the relative newcomer, one that didn’t pay off as Chimaev beat him down over three rounds to earn the decision win.

Coming into this fight, Chimaev possesses a significant strikes landed per minute clip of 7.89, with an accuracy rate of 59%. He has also shown an elite ability on the ground, with two submissions inside the UFC already and a submission average of 2.7 per 15 minutes in the octagon.
