UFC 280 Breakdown
The UFC makes their next trip to the famous 'Fight Island' in Abu Dhabi right before Halloween for UFC 280. Both the lightweight and bantamweight titles will be on the line in two of the most intriguing matchups in each division's illustrious history.
Former UFC Lightweight Champion, Charles Oliveira has one loss on his record since securing the promotion's 155-pound title at UFC 262 when he knocked out Michael Chandler...and that loss is to the scale. The Brazilian missed weight by one-half pound ahead of his scheduled title defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274, a bout that Oliveira would submit Gaethje inside of just one round. However, due to the weight miss, Oliveira would be stripped of his title despite the dominating win.
Meanwhile, outside of a lone mistake against Adriano Martins, back in 2015, Islam Makhachev has been unbeatable, rattling off 10-straight wins to earn him a shot at UFC gold. Makhachev holds victories over the likes of Arman Tsarukyan, Dan Hooker, and most recently, Bobby Green, this past February during his seven-year unbeaten run.
The co-main event of UFC 280 will see 135-pound king, Aljamain Sterling make his second title defense, this time, against the former two-time champion, TJ Dillashaw.
Sterling, 32, controversially won the UFC Bantamweight Championship when he was struck with an illegal knee by then-champion, Petr Yan at UFC 259. Sterling would put the doubters (for the most part) to rest at UFC 273 when he defeated Yan via split-decision to retain his title.
Standing across from Sterling at UFC 280 will be TJ Dillashaw, who's looking to become the second-ever three-time champion in UFC history, matching the only current three-time champion, Randy Couture. Dillashaw most recently defeated perennial top challenger, Corey Sandhagen, in July 2021, which was his first bout in over two years following a suspension due to the use of a banned substance.
