UFC 279 Breakdown

The UFC returns to the fight capital of the world to host Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz, which takes place in the main event of UFC 279.

One of the fastest rising stars in UFC history takes center stage at UFC 279 in the form of Khamzat Chimaev. The undefeated Russian-born contender came into the UFC in July 2020 when he quickly dispatched John Phillips. Chimaev would return to the octagon just 10-days later and finished Rhys McKee inside of one round. Chimaev would then begin to climb the ladder and needed just 17-seconds to knock out middleweight staple, Gerald Meerschaert.

Chimaev would then face his first-ranked opponent in the form of Li Jingliang but Chimaev continued to exceed expectations and would submit Jingliang in round number one. Chimaev would then face the biggest test of his career at UFC 273 when he faced former title challenger, Gilbert Burns. However, Chimaev would ace another test as he was beaten up and severely hurt numerous times during the bout but that didn't deter him from ultimately securing the unanimous decision victory.

Standing across from Chimaev at UFC 278 will be none other than Nate Diaz. The fan-favorite superstar made his UFC debut in 2007 when he won the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter. Since his TUF 5 victory, Diaz would have a roller coaster run in the promotion before leaping from fan-favorite to megastar, due in part to his submission victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 196, a fight Diaz took on just over a week's notice.

Diaz would lose the rematch to McGregor at UFC 202 and has fought sporadically since the pair of bouts against McGregor. Diaz last competed at UFC 263, where he was on the wrong side of a unanimous decision against the man who will next challenge Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 278, Leon Edwards.
