JULIANNA PENA (12-4-0)

The champ stunned the MMA world when she submitted Amanda Nunes with a rear naked choke in the second round back in December. Pena came into the title fight as confident as we’ve seen from a Nunes challenger and she backed it up in a big way. Julianna Pena outstruck Nunes 79-46 in the bout, each fighter landed a takedown, and eventually Pena got the submission. This was the Venezuelan Vixen’s second straight win, both victories coming via rear naked choke.

Pena is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and her grappling skills are represented on the stat sheet. The 32-year-old champion is averaging 2.43 successful takedowns per 15 minutes and landing at a 55% rate. However, when it comes to takedown defense, she’s only defending 22% of opposing takedown attempts. That could lead to trouble considering Nunes is a world-class grappler. As for Pena’s striking abilities, she’s averaging 3.36 significant strikes per minute while absorbing just 2.02 strikes per minute.

AMANDA NUNES (21-5-0)

The Lioness had her 12-fight win streak snapped when she was submitted in December. It was her first loss since September of 2014 and just her third overall defeat in the UFC octagon.

The first-ranked challenger comes in averaging 4.55 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 2.81 strikes per minute. Nunes is a black belt in BJJ and she also has a brown belt in Judo. The Brazilian averages 2.46 takedowns per 15 minutes and lands at a 54% success rate. As for her defense, Nunes fends off 82% of her opponent’s takedown attempts. She was taken down once in the first installment of this saga with Julianna Pena, the first time she’d been taken down in six fights.
