Dustin Poirier vs. Michael Chandler Breakdown

Dustin Poirier (28-7)

Former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion, Dustin Poirier looks to leap back into title contention when he makes the walk to the octagon inside of The World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden for UFC 281.

Poirier, 33, went on the run of his career between 2017 and the beginning of 2019. "The Diamond" rattled off five-straight wins, defeating the likes of Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez, before beating Max Holloway at UFC 236 to capture the interim title at 155-pounds.

Poirier would then run into the buzzsaw that is UFC Hall of Famer, Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in a title unification bout, which saw "The Eagle" dominate Poirier en route to a third-round submission. "The Diamond" would bounce back nicely, defeating Dan Hooker in the 2020 Fight of The Year before taking back-to-back TKO wins over Conor McGregor to earn another shot at UFC gold. Unfortunately for Poirier, he would be submitted by Charles Oliveira at UFC 269, again, coming up short in his bid for an undisputed UFC strap.

Michael Chandler (23-7)

Standing across from Poirier at UFC 281 will be fan-favorite, Michael Chandler.

"Iron" Mike came to the UFC in 2021 after being the face of Bellator for over a decade and immediately made an impact. Chandler spent just over 120-seconds inside of the UFC octagon before he knocked out the aforementioned Dan Hooker, earning him a title shot against the previously mentioned Charles Oliveira. However, Chandler would be knocked out by "Do Bronx" and his consolation prize? A matchup against Justin Gaethje, which ended up as the 2021 Fight of The Year, but unfortunately for Chandler, he would be on the wrong side of the judge's scorecards as Gaethje earned the unanimous decision victory.

Chandler would bounce back by knocking out the former interim champion, Tony Ferguson, this past May in a bonafide Knockout of The Year candidate at UFC 274.
