Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev Breakdown
Charles Oliveira (33-8-1)
Former (and currently uncrowned) UFC Lightweight Champion, Charles Oliveira is currently on the run of his career. The Brazilian star secured his first taste of UFC gold when he knocked out Michael Chandler at UFC 262 to become the promotion's 155-pound king. Since his victory over Chandler, Oliveira successfully defended his title when he knocked out Dustin Poirier at UFC 269. However, Oliveira would suffer his first defeat as champion...to the scale. That's right, Oliveira was officially stripped of his title just 24 hours before his encounter with Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.
Therefore, when the pair squared off the following evening, only Gaethje could walk out of Phoenix, Arizona as UFC Champion. Unfortunately for 'The Highlight', Oliveira defeated Gaethje via first-round submission (rear-naked choke), and the UFC Lightweight Championship would remain vacated, as will remain the case until Oliveira makes the way to the octagon at the Etihad Arena on October 22.
Islam Makhachev (22-1)
Standing across from Oliveira at UFC 280 is none other than Russia's own, Islam Makhachev.
Rewind to 2015, an 11-0, a 23-year-old teammate of Khabib Nurmagomedov makes his UFC debut and does so in an utterly dominant fashion, securing a second-round submission victory over Leo Kuntz at UFC 187. However, in his second fight under the UFC banner, Makhachev would then get cracked by Adriano Martins and be knocked out in under two minutes to suffer the first defeat of his professional Mixed Martial Arts career.
However, following his first career loss, Makhachev hasn't done much...outside of rattling off 10 consecutive wins, defeating the likes of Chris Wade, Nik Lentz, Gleison Tibau, Kajan Johnson, Arman Tsarukyan, Davi Ramos, Drew Dober, Thiago Moises, Dan Hooker, and most recently, Bobby Green, this past February.
UFC 280 will mark Makhachev's first opportunity at UFC gold.
