Jimmy Crute vs. Alonzo Menifield Breakdown
Jimmy Crute (12-3)
Looking to right the ship at UFC 284 is Australia's own Jimmy Crute.
Following an unblemished 6-0 record in the independent circuit, Jimmy Crute earned his way into the UFC with a first-round TKO of Chris Birchler on the 2018 edition of Dana White's Contender Series. Crute immediately lived up to the hype upon his arrival in the Ultimate Fighting Championship after defeating Paul Craig and Sam Alvey. However, Crute would suffer the first loss of his professional career when he was submitted by Misha Cirkunov. Crute would get back on track with a pair of victories over Michal Oleksiejczuk and Modestas Bukauskas. Despite seemingly righting the ship, Crute heads into UFC 284 on the back of two straight losses against Anthony Smith and most recently suffering a KO loss to current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jamahal Hill in December 2021.
If Crute were to secure his first win in almost three years, dragging Menifield to deep waters seems to be the best bet for the Aussie contender. Crute holds a massive 4.87 to 0.81 takedowns landed per 15-minute advantage over his American counterpart. In addition to his massive takedown advantage, Crute is extremely active on the mat with submissions as he attempts over two submissions per 15 minutes.
Alonzo Menifield (13-3)
Standing across from Crute and looking to spoil the homecoming is none other than Alonzo 'Atomic' Menifield.
Much like his opponent on Saturday night, the 35-year-old contender in Menifield is a Dana White's Contender Series alum. Menifield earned himself a spot on the UFC roster following a first-round stoppage of Daniel Jolly back in 2017. Upon his arrival in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Menifield quickly made a name for himself with back-to-back wins over Vinicius Moreira and Paul Craig. A lackluster 2-3 run for Menifield would be in the cards following his undefeated start, which featured losses against Devin Clark, Ovince St-Preux, and William Knight. Wins over Fabio Cherant and Ed Herman were mixed into the less-than-stellar run for Menifield. 'Atomic' heads into UFC 284 looking to extend his winning streak to three after securing victories over Askar Mozharov and most recently Misha Cirkunov this past October.
While looking for his third-straight victory, Menifield will be keen to keep this one on the feet. 'Atomic' lands 3.91 significant strikes per minute while 56% of all of his thrown strikes are indeed significant blows. Menifield also boasts slightly better striking defense than his Australian counterpart as he blocks 52% of his opponent's shots.
