While the main card of UFC 285 will rightfully get the bulk of the attention, the prelim card is sneaky good and features a few fights that I can not wait to watch. One such fight, which starts off the prelim card on ESPN+, is a middleweight bout between Julian Marquez and Canada’s Marc-Andre Barriault.

In this piece, we’re going to take a closer look at both fighters and where the odds market has settled one day out from this terrific matchup.

Julian Marquez vs. Marc-Andre Barriault Preview

Julian Marquez (9-3-0)

It's fantastic to see Julian Marquez (9-3) getting more looks to fight on big cards because he always adds energy no matter whose his opponent is. Yet given that he recently suffered his second defeat in the UFC, his aggressive approach will never allow him to dominate the middleweight category, as far as I'm concerned.

His second UFC bout ended in a split decision loss to Alessio Di Chirico (2018), and he then submitted Maki Pitolo (2021) and Sam Alvey (2021). The following year, he ran into Gregory Rodrigues, who handed him his first UFC knockout defeat.

Marquez should start off more quickly because he is more explosive, and if he lands early, he can control the tempo in this one throughout.

Marc-Andre Barriault  (14-6-0)

Although Marc-Andre Barriault (14-6-0) is more skilled, he has also had trouble maintaining consistency. He began his UFC career in 2019 with a three-fight losing streak before making a strong comeback in his following three fights. But, last year, Chidi Njokuani delivered him the first knockout of his professional career. After losing by submission to Alexander Hernandez, he came back with a rare submission victory over Jordan Wright.

Barriault will attempt to wear Marquez down in the clinch if he fights wisely, but I anticipate him to trade shots just as he always does, to mostly his detriment.
