With great fights throughout the night on Saturday, one fight that one of the first we’ll see is a matchup between two strawweight in Jessica Penne vs. Tabatha Ricci. While both are on the opposite ends of the UFC age spectrum, this still has the potential to be an entertaining bout right out of the gates.

Let’s take a closer look at both fighters and where the odds are headed in this UFC 285 bout.

Tabatha Ricci vs. Jessica Penne Preview

Tabatha Ricci (7-1-0)

A loss to Fiorot in Ricci's UFC debut in 2021 was followed by two victories in six months, earning her the nickname "Baby Shark" for her tenacious fighting style.  While the strawweight class is one of the weakest in the UFC, a third win in this event will most certainly propel her into the top 15 of that division.

Ricci has a significant advantage in terms of analytics, particularly striking defense, takedown averages (3x), and takedown accuracy (2x), despite the fight being close on the feet. Although Ricci's size typically causes her to be slow to start going, I believe that she will ultimately be able to complete this task with a reasonable amount of ease.

Jessica Penne (14-7-0)

The fact that Penne, now 40 years old and a former challenger for the strawweight belt, has only won two victories since 2014 creates the picture of a fighter who has been plagued by injuries and illness, which has mostly kept her out of the cage. Since joining the UFC via The Ultimate Fighter, Penne has been the epitome of unreliability, as she has had more bouts canceled (9) than real fights (6) in the promotion.

Tabatha Ricci vs. Jessica Penne Odds

When these odds opened up months ago, Ricci was listed as a -240 favorite, with Penne coming close to +200 across the board. Since then, the market has largely agreed with the oddsmakers, as things have settled in the same range just one day out from the fight.

For backers of “Baby Shark” Ricci, DraftKings currently has the best number posted at -230, while Penne Backers would be best suited at BetRivers, which currently has her at +250.
