UFC 251 is hardly off to the start that president Dana White and the rest of the company was hoping for, but there may be a way they can still save Saturday’s main event with one of the sport’s most exciting fighters.
Earlier this weekend, the UFC announced that Gilbert Burns, who was scheduled to take on welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, tested positive for COVID-19 and would have to drop out of this weekend’s main event.
Usman was heavily favored over Burns, coming in at -240 while the challenger’s odds sat at +200. Usman’s odds implied a 70.6% chance of winning, while Burns’ odds gave him just a 33.3% chance of pulling off the upset.
With the UFC scrambling to salvage the July 11 card, a name that has been rumored to step in and fill the void for the first ever fight at Fight Island is knockout artist and current BMF champion Jorge Masvidal.
With the fight looking like a real possibility, and one that would garner even more hype than the scheduled Usman vs. Burns fight, FOX Bet has put out odds for Usman vs. Masvidal.
Masvidal’s odds imply a 35.7% chance of taking the belt. At -250, Usman has a 71.4% implied probability of winning.
There are still legal and logistical hurdles that need to be cleared before this fight is official, but if the UFC can pull it off, this will be by far their most-hyped fight of the year.
