College Football Playoff Betting Odds

The College Football Playoff is finally here. Friday marks the start of 2021, but it also marks the best day of the college football season. We get started with No. 1 Alabama taking on No. 4 Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl. Then, in our other national semifinal, No. 2 Clemson goes up against No. 3 Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl.

Usually these semifinal matchups are expected to be close-fought battles, coming down to the wire before an eventual winner is decided. But this year, both games feature spreads of more than a touchdown, including a Bama team that comes in as massive 19.5-point favorites.

So we know that the oddsmakers aren’t expecting Friday’s games to be close, but what about the betting public? Who are they backing on New Year’s Day? Let’s take a look and find out.

Rose Bowl Betting – Alabama vs. Notre Dame

No team has really been able to put up much of a fight this year against the Crimson Tide. Only one of their 11 games were decided by fewer than 10 points, and it came in the SEC Championship game against Florida.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame comes into Friday’s game following a 34-10 whooping at the hands of Clemson in the ACC Championship.

Despite the fact that Alabama has been the most dominant team in the country, and Notre Dame is coming off a lopsided loss, bettors seem willing to take the points with the Irish. 51% of all spread bets have been on Notre Dame to cover the 19.5 points.

As far as moneyline wagers are concerned, it’s much more lopsided in Bama’s favor. 68% of all moneyline bets are on the top-seeded Crimson Tide.

Sugar Bowl Betting – Clemson vs. Ohio State

Our second game of the night is expected to be much closer than our first as No. 2 Clemson takes on No. 3 Ohio State with the spread set at around 7.5 points.

Ohio State is still unbeaten, but it’s been a wild ride for the Buckeyes. OSU has only played six games this season, and they looked less than perfect their last time out against Northwestern in the Big 10 title game.

Clemson avenged their only loss of the season with a win over Notre Dame in the ACC Championship and come in as the favorite, and bettors also like the Tigers. 71% of all spread bets are on Clemson, and 63% of all moneyline wagers are on the defending national runners-up.
