Connecticut vs. Fresno State Preview
The Connecticut Huskies and Fresno State Bulldogs open the 2021 college football season Saturday. Kickoff at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif., is set for 2 p.m. ET. The Fresno State Bulldogs are expected to roll in its opener against the UConn Huskies. The UConn Huskies were moved from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) to Independent status in August 2020. However, the program did not compete due to COVID-19 last season so 2021 will mark their return to Independent status.
Back in its last full season, UConn averaged 18.9 PPG on 344.9 yards of total offense while allowing 40.5 PPG on 467.3 yards of total defense per game in the 2019 season.
Fresno State showed upside in Kalen DeBoer’s first season, but an aggressive, all-or-nothing defense suffered too many “alls” in a 3-3 campaign in 2020. Lead by running back Ronnie Rivers in 2020, Projected over 13 games, the veteran running back was on pace for 1,100 rushing yards and nearly 600 receiving yards last season. He’s one of the most exciting skill players out west, and with the bonus year of eligibility, he could finish his career close to 5,000 career yards from scrimmage.
Fresno State’s defense was inconsistent in 2020, ranking third nationally in sack rate, third in passing success rate allowed, and they allowed 20 points per game in wins but 40 per game in losses. This is once again going to be an explosive Fresno State offense that will have them competing for a Mountain-West title in 2021.
Fresno State had some impressive performances during a COVID-19 shortened 2020 season and finished the year 3-3.
Oddsmakers price Fresno State as massive favorites on the moneyline giving them a 98.4% chance to start their season off on the right foot with a victory over UConn. UConn is priced as massive underdogs at +1600 (Risk $100 to win $1600) to record the upset on Saturday.
