No matter how good or bad the product is on a year-to-year basis, Notre Dame football will always be one of the most popular teams in the country.

Last year, the Fighting Irish shocked the world in the regular season, taking down mighty Clemson in the regular season and eventually earning a College Football Playoff berth. In the end, Alabama was too much for Notre Dame as they fell to the Tide, 31-14, in the Rose Bowl.

Still, last season was seen as a resounding success for the Irish, despite falling short of the ultimate goal and ending the season with two straight losses.

Unfortunately for Notre Dame, the Ian Book era is now over as their former starting QB has moved on to the NFL. So, expectations in South Bend should definitely be under control after losing their star QB, right?

Think again.

According to the latest College Football Playoff betting data from our friends over at BetMGM, Notre Dame is the most popular pick among bettors to make the playoffs this season.

Forget the fact that they’ve lost their starting quarterback. Notre Dame odds are now long enough where fans, and the betting public, consider them a good value.

College Football Playoff Odds: Notre Dame’s Odds Slashed

So, we know that Notre Dame is the most backed team when it comes to the College Football Playoff odds market, but how much more popular are they than the second most popular pick?

According to our friends at BetMGM, 24.6% of all bets on a team to make the College Football Playoff have backed Notre Dame to make it back to the CFP. The second most popular team is Georgia with 13.5% of the public backing them. They’re followed by Iowa State at 12.3%.

As for which team has the most money on them, shockingly it’s none of the teams mentioned above.

32.6% of the handle is on Michigan to make the College Football Playoff. 27.2% of the money is on Notre Dame and 7.3% is on Georgia.

This overload of money and bets on Notre Dame to make the CFP has resulted in their odds being cut. The Irish started at +800 to make the College Football Playoff at BetMGM. Those odds are now down to +700.

Notre Dame Key Returning Players

1. RB – Kyren Williams

2. S – Kyle Hamilton

3. OL – Jarrett Patterson

4. CB – Clarence Lewis

5. WR – Avery Davis

It’s tough to find key returning players on Notre Dame’s team this season, which makes it all more shocking to see them so heavily backed.

Their No. 1 returning player has to be considered Kyren Williams. Last season’s standout running back is back in South Bend and looking to add to his 1,125 yards rushing on a crazy 5.3 YPC from last season.

All-American Safety Kyle Hamilton is back and will look to anchor a solid secondary and offensive lineman Jarrett Paterson also returns. Outside of that, there aren’t a ton of impact started coming back for Notre Dame in 2021.
