Iowa vs. Iowa State: Preview

It is the battle of the unbeaten of the Heartland State Colleges this Saturday afternoon. College gameday will be in town, and the Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes game will be a great appetizer before the first full Sunday of NFL Football.

Both teams are 1-0 and ranked in the top 25. From the most recent College Football AP rankings, Iowa State is ranked #9, and Iowa is #10. This game has quickly shaped up as the game of the week for college football fans.

Iowa State's coach Matt Campbell is coming off an excellent year for the Cyclones and leads a solid coaching staff who develops talent well. In years past, College Football fans do not think of them right away as a playoff contender, but this year they certainly are. Campbell has a long list of accomplishments, but a win over the Hawkeyes is not on there yet.

Iowa vs. Iowa State: Key Players

Both running backs are key players in the Hawkeye State matchup this weekend. Tyler Goodson for the Hawkeyes finished with 99 yards and a touchdown in Iowa's win against Indiana last week. Goodson has been named to numerous preseason watch lists and is a big part of Iowa's seven-game winning streak carrying over from last season.

For the Cyclones, Breece Hall can be a difference-maker for an offense that has yet to get going this season. Hall led the nation in rushing yards during the 2020 FBS season and was a unanimous All-American selection. Last week, Hall finished with 69 yards and a touchdown in a win over Northern Iowa, 16-10. Iowa State Tight End is questionable to play this weekend, and Quarterback Brock Purdy may lean on Hall early and often.

Iowa QB Spencer Petras has a winning history despite the low offensive production out of the Hawkeyes offense. Last week, Petras finished with only 145 yards (13 of 27) and no touchdowns in a 34-6 win of the 17th- ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Regardless, he has been at the helm of the Hawkeye offense that has won their last seven games. However, Petras faces his most formidable opponent since his tenure in the Cyclones this Saturday.

Brock Purdy is the winningest Iowa State QB in the team history and holds a 24-11 record. He has led the Cyclones to six fourth-quarter comeback victories in his career and will likely lean on his experience in this rivalry game. Purdy finished with 199 yards last week in a win over Northern Iowa and no touchdowns or interceptions.
