College Football National Championship Odds: Ohio State a Real Threat to Contend for College Football National Title

It hasn’t been the best of years for Ohio State. They began the year with Minnesota giving them a run and a loss to Oregon. They’ve since righted the ship, but they’ve been out of the top-4 ever since. Oddsmakers don’t expect that to last much longer.

Ohio State has never budged from their stop on the oddsmarket. They’ve been third to win the College Football Playoff all season. What’s changed is how realistic that is. Ohio State had seen odds as low as +1600, or an implied 5.9% chance to win the title. They now sit at +800 or an implied 11.1% chance, their lowest odds since the preseason.

Bettors aren’t as kind to Ohio State. Ohio State has not been within the top-10 in betting to win the National Title in any week since their loss to Oregon. This week is no different. They trail the likes of Georgia, Alabama, Cincinnati, Penn State, and Iowa. Even North Carolina and Wake Forest have more bets placed on them.

Ohio State is a hard nut to crack. They certainly have a chance to make the playoffs this year, but they can’t afford another loss. Yet, they still have Penn State, Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan on their schedule. That’s not even counting a potential game with Iowa if they make the conference finals. With 0 wins against a ranked opponent this year, it’s hard to say Ohio State can win all of those games. So, it’s easy to see why bettors are more apprehensive than oddsmakers.
