Central Michigan Chippewas Preview

Jim McElwain and Central Michigan are certainly no strangers to playing in close games. Entering this college football betting matchup, six of the Chippewas’ previous eight games on the season have been decided by 10 points or less. This includes their most recent contest in Week 8, a one-point loss to a Northern Illinois team that has been much better than expected. Still, the fact that they were outscored 21-10 in the second half certainly had to leave them with the feeling that they let one slip away. CMU’s scores speak to just how chaotic MAC football has been this season.

The Chippewas certainly have some firepower on offense. Running back Lew Nichols burned NIU for nearly 200 yards rushing and a pair of scores two weeks ago. QB Daniel Richardson also struck for three touchdowns through the air. Wideout Kalil Pimpleton had 130 yards receiving and a score. It marked his third 100-yard game in the last five for Central. Unfortunately, despite the offense averaging just under 450 yards per game, the Chippewas’ defense has allowed over 400 per contest to opponents. Considering that offense is also the strength of Western Michigan, it’s no surprise to see such a high total for this midweek MACtion battle.

Western Michigan Broncos Preview

Despite entering Wednesday’s college football betting tilt with the superior win-loss record, Western Michigan is only 2-2 in MAC play. The Broncos have taken on a bit of a Jekyll & Hyde persona this season. Tim Lester’s squad has picked up impressive wins over a Power 5 foe in Pittsburgh, San Jose State and Kent State. They have also mixed in disappointing losses to Ball State and Toledo. After stampeding all over the Golden Flashes in a 33-point win back in Week 7, Western sputtered offensively two weeks ago in a blowout road loss to the Rockets. Which team shows up on Wednesday night is anyone’s guess.

Statistically, the Broncos stand out as one of the best teams in the Mid-American Conference on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they rank third in average yards per game (433.4) and are averaging 29.0 points per outing. Defensively, the Broncos are allowing the fewest yards of any team in the MAC. However, they still are surrendering nearly four touchdowns per game. Slowing down the talented Central Michigan offense on Wednesday won’t be easy. Therefore, the onus will be on quarterback Kaleb Eleby and the offense to perform better than they did two weeks ago. Western boasts a talented one-two punch in the backfield. Sean Tyler and transfer La’Darius Jefferson will look to rebound after being held to less than 80 yards combined against the Rockets.

Central Michigan vs. Western Michigan odds

The point spread for this MACtion battle has held steady at 10 in favor of the Broncos since opening. Where this game has seen some line movement is to the over on total points. Oddsmakers originally opened the total at 64.5, but action has seen it swell to 67 across the college football betting market. In a conference where upsets have been a regular occurrence this season, it is interesting to see Western Michigan given a 78% chance to win this rivalry game outright.

Central Michigan vs. Western Michigan Betting Picks and Prediction

With plenty of offensive talent on both sides, the initial inkling here is to project a shootout. Both Central Michigan and Western Michigan are also among the fastest teams in all of FBS in terms of pace and plays run. However, both teams figure to present some challenges for the opposing offense in this game. While Western Michigan has actually been steady defensively, for the most part, all season, the Chippewas have also been fairly stout against the run. Then again, they leaked nearly 200 yards on the ground in their most recent game. Speaking to that end, both sides will also be looking to bounce back from disappointing losses two weeks ago.

When it comes to the MAC West Division, the loser of this game is pretty much done for in terms of running down Northern Illinois and having a chance to compete for the conference title. Everything is in front of Tim Lester and the Broncos. They cap off regular season play with a road game against the Huskies in three weeks’ time. The spread may seem too big, but Vegas has a way of being right more often than not. In each of their three wins at Waldo Stadium this season, WMU has triumphed by 20 points or more. Lean towards laying the points with the Broncos.

Central Michigan vs. Western Michigan Prediction: Western Michigan -10 (-105)
