LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Odds: Tide Given 97% Chance to Beat LSU

The latest chapter in a storied SEC rivalry will be written this Saturday night when the LSU Tigers collide with the Alabama Crimson Tide. While there have been countless close finishes between these two over the years, it has been a relatively one-sided rivalry in recent seasons. The college football betting odds reflect this notion ahead of Saturday’s showdown. Oddsmakers have tabbed the home team as nearly a 30-point favorite ahead of the 86th meeting between LSU and Alabama.

LSU Tigers Preview

Just two seasons removed from going unbeaten and winning the national championship, the LSU football program is in complete disarray. With the announcement that Ed Orgeron would not be returning after this season, a handful of players quickly announced their intentions to transfer. Just this week, quarterback Myles Brennan joined that list. Originally, there was optimism that he might return for the Tigers’ rivalry game against Alabama. Not only has Brennan failed to resume practicing but now he is transferring elsewhere. That leaves some sort of combination of Max Johnson and Garrett Nussmeier for this Saturday. Neither quarterback was very impressive two weeks ago against Ole Miss.

After rushing for nearly 300 yards in a win over Florida, Tyrion Davis-Price was back to being held in check as LSU fell to the Rebels on the road. The Tigers have uncharacteristically struggled to run the ball all season long. The outburst against Florida appears to unfortunately have been a mirage. Orgeron’s defense has also struggled, particularly in the secondary. LSU enters this college football betting contest giving up the fourth-most yards and third-most points per game in the SEC.

Alabama Crimson Tide Preview

Like the Tigers, Alabama will be fresh off of a bye week coming into Saturday’s showdown. Unlike LSU, Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide are just as buttoned up as ever. Alabama turned a close affair with Tennessee two weeks ago into a four-touchdown victory courtesy of a dominant fourth quarter. Bryce Young was fantastic with over 370 yards through the air and a pair of touchdowns. Alabama’s dangerous WR duo of John Metchie and Jameson Williams figure to have their way this week against the poor LSU secondary.

Of course, Alabama also loves to run the ball behind an offensive line that is laden with NFL talent. Brian Robinson Jr. continued his phenomenal campaign against the Vols two weeks ago with 107 yards and three scores. Young also had a pair of rushing touchdowns to round out his phenomenal effort. Alabama is a massive college football betting favorite for a reason. However, Saban’s defense has been prone to making mistakes and giving up big plays this season. Knowing that LSU will give Saturday’s game everything they have, it will be important for the Crimson Tide to stay disciplined defensively early and often.

LSU vs. Alabama odds

This SEC rivalry has yet to experience a whole lot of line movement relative to opening numbers. The spread has moved down only half a point after opening at Alabama -29. The total has seen the bigger shift, moving up to 66 after oddsmakers originally tabbed it at 63.5. It is worth noting the plus-money odds to the over. This could suggest that buyback to the under after the initial move is a possibility. It is pretty astounding to see Alabama given nearly a 98% chance to win this rivalry battle.

LSU vs. Alabama Betting Picks and Prediction

To put the recent dominance of Alabama in this rivalry into focus, consider that the Crimson Tide will be going for their tenth win in the last 11 meetings between the two schools on Saturday. Outside of LSU’s national championship season, the Tigers have had no answer for Nick Saban’s machine in Tuscaloosa. It’s extremely difficult to envision any upset being sprung this year especially given the current state of the LSU program.

Looking at this year’s matchup, one has to wonder whether LSU is capable of slowing down the Alabama attack at all. They certainly weren’t last year, as the Tide rolled to a 55-17 win on the road. Saban may not have quite as strong of a team this season, but one could argue that LSU is worse as well. Knowing that this is a rivalry game, expect Alabama to be ready out of the gates. In other words, this one could really get ugly in a hurry, unlike two weeks ago against Tennessee. Assuming LSU is capable of putting up a couple of scores, playing the total over is another way to approach this matchup.

LSU vs. Alabama Prediction: Alabama -28.5 (-105) and Over 66 (+104)
