Iowa State Cyclones vs. Texas Longhorns Betting Odds, Picks, and Preview

Texas will attempt to avoid a fourth-straight loss when it takes on Iowa State as it comes off a disappointing setback against West Virginia. Despite both suffering losses at the weekend, Iowa State is still (technically) in the thick of the race for the Big 12 title, while Texas has lost the plot entirely.

Predictably, bookmakers corner this pivotal Big 12 tilt with the hosts as the touchdown favorites, and early betting shows the public is down with Iowa State. But should bettors lay the points with the Cyclones?

Texas Longhorns Preview

Texas is spinning out of control after taking its third-straight loss and slipping to a 4-4 record overall (2-3 in conference play). The Longhorns went into Waco filled with optimism, and while they got off to a bright start, they fritted away the double-digit lead and succumbed to the No. 16 Baylor Bears 31-24. It was the third time the Longhorns allowed a double-digit lead to slip through their fingers.

The Bears came into the game with a specific game plan to snuff the Longhorns’ ground game. They were successful. Steady defending and a concentrated rushing attack ruled the day as the Bears held Heisman Trophy hopeful, Bijan Robinson, to a paltry 43 yards rushing and a touchdown on 17 carries.

The onus was on quarterback Casey Thompson to bear the brunt of the Longhorn’s offensive initiative. Thompson found some success as he connected with wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who scampered for 115 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. But he was outmatched in the second half, and the Bears outscored the Longhorns 21-3 as they rallied to victory.

Iowa State Cyclones Preview

A week after Iowa State masterminded a stunning upset over the then-undefeated and ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, they suffered a big letdown behind a loss to West Virginia.

The Cyclones lost to the Mountaineers 38-31, failing to come through as the 7.5-point road chalk in the betting, The loss saw the Cyclones slip to a 5-3 record and 3-2 record in the conference, veering off the path to the Big 12 title in the process.

Well, they’re no longer in the position to control their destiny – a privilege they’d earned the week before after beating Oklahoma State. Things looked so promising for the Cyclones after they beat the Cowboys 24-21 in Week 8. Now, they’re a game behind Oklahoma State and Baylor, and two adrift of top-of-the-table Oklahoma.

Credit goes to the Mountaineers for overcoming the Cyclones’ stout defense. The Mountaineers put up 492 yards in total offense while quarterback Jarret Doege shredded the Cyclones’ defense for 370

passing yards – both of which represented the most Iowa State has given up against a team and an opposing quarterback.

Texas vs. Iowa State Betting Preview and Prediction

All things come to an end. Even terrible losing streaks such as the Texas Longhorns are in the midst of right now. But betting on it is another matter entirely. Against any other team, a Texas bounce-back performance might have a leg to stand on. But Iowa State will be motivated to get back into the Big 12 title race. Knowing Texas is there for the taking too, and has a penchant for choking late in games and crumbling under pressure, only adds to Iowa State’s chances of coming through with the win and cover.

Iowa State vs. Texas Prediction: Iowa State -7 (-115)
