Ohio State vs. Purdue Betting Odds, Preview, and Picks

The Purdue Boilermakers face a tough assignment against the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday, as evinced by the NCAAF odds for this Big Ten contest. Books corner this game with the top-ranked hosts, tipping Ohio State as the -20 favorites across multiple sportsbooks.

Despite this lopsided market, the public is all over Purdue like a rash in early betting markets, grabbing the 20-points on offer with enthusiasm. The Boilermakers are flush off a 40-29 win over No.3 Michigan State, having punched above their weight-class to hand the Spartans their first defeat of the season. It marked their second Big Ten upset after dealing Iowa their first defeat of the season in October.

Whether Purdue can continue their upsetting ways remains to be seen, but the Public rates its chances to at least cover if not win.

Purdue Boilermakers Preview

Purdue defied the NCAAF odds for a second time this season with an upset over a ranked opponent. Three weeks after orchestrating the 24-7 win over No.2 Iowa last month, the Boilermakers sent No.3 Michigan State out of West Lafayette smarting behind a 40-29 defeat.

The Boilermakers got off to a fast start and never trailed the Spartans. Quarterback Aiden O’Connell threw for 536 yards and three touchdowns, and wide receiver David Bell led the team with 217 yards and one touchdown. The defense came up big with key turnovers while limiting Michigan State’s potent running game at the same time.

On the heels of the victory, Purdue tied Minnesota at the top of the Big Ten West standings. However, Minnesota wins the tiebreaker with the 20-13 win on October 2.

Ohio State Buckeyes Preview

Aside from a hiccup against Oregon in Week 2, Ohio State has played a flawless season. They’re 8-1 overall and come into Week 11 riding a seven-game winning streak. However, recently, they struggled to get the win over Nebraska on the road.

Although Ohio State defeated Nebraska 26-17, they failed to come through as the closing, 17-point favorites. The game was closer than most anticipated it would be, and the Buckeyes didn’t quite look like the College Football Playoff contenders they’re hoping to be again this season. (The Ohio State Buckeyes lost to Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Final last season.)

The Buckeyes have missed covers in their last two games. They missed the cover as the 18.5-point favorites in a 33-24 win over Penn State.

Ohio State vs. Purdue Odds

Bookmakers opened Purdue as the 20-point road underdogs, even though they’ve shown to have giant-slaying credentials. Purdue upset Iowa 24-7 as the 11-point underdogs on October 16. Last week, the Boilermakers defeated Michigan State 40-29 to come through as the 2.5-point home underdogs comfortably.

This is the biggest point-spread Purdue is faced with this season. They’re 5-4-0 ATS, covering three of their last four games. The total has gone under in seven of Purdue’s nine games. The Buckeyes are 4-5-0 ATS while the over has cashed in five of their nine games. The game total is projected to 62.5 points right now, up from an opening 61.5 points.

Ohio State vs. Purdue Betting Predictions and Picks

If Purdue pulls off a third-straight upset against a Top-10 ranked opponent, it would be epic. It would also be a rare occurrence – if not a first. In the past 50 years, only four instances of an unranked team upsetting a ranked opponent twice have occurred.

So, it’s somewhat surprising that the Boilermakers aren’t getting more respect from the bookmakers. Granted, Ohio State Buckeyes are a force to be reckoned with, but they’ve slowed down, and they’re not crushing opponents as they were previously. In the last two games, the Buckeyes won by 9-point margins only.

Taking everything into consideration, Purdue does appear to be in a value spot here. The line is simply way too generous for a team that has shown it can play up to and beat some of the elite teams in the conference. However, f you like Purdue to cover, don't waffle for too long. If the betting continues towards Purdue, the line will likely drop down before kick-off and the value could be lost.

Ohio State vs. Purdue Pick: Purdue +20
