It’s less than ten days until the return of the NFL season and there has been a huge shift in the OROTY betting market.

Washington Football Team’s Antonio Gibson was as long as +15000 when the market opened in June, meaning that oddsmakers’ gave him an implied chance of less than 1% that he would win the award.

However, a spate of bets in the past week which has culminated in 53.33% of all wagers placed in the past 24 hours backing Gibson after the release of former Washington running back Adrian Peterson. Oddsmakers have taken evasive action and cut his odds into +1200. Put simply, this means his likelihood of winning in their eyes has jumped to 7.69%.

This seismic shortening of his price means that Gibson is now fourth-favorite to be named the best offensive rookie, unthinkable even just weeks ago.

Oddschecker spokesperson Pete Watt: "The former Memphis man was drafted by Washington having played most of his football as a wide receiver, and the recent release of Adrian Peterson has caught the attention of sports bettors”

“They clearly knew something that the oddsmakers didn’t and have rushed to place their bets at what they perceive to be excellent value. The sportsbooks have panicked and reacted accordingly, but not before a decent amount of money has been wagered on the Georgia native.”

“Only time will tell if it’s a smart bet but if Gibson starts off strongly then there are going to be some jangling nerves in the sportsbooks offices!”
