New York Jets vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Odds Preview

The Carolina Panthers, coming off a 5-11 season and featuring a new Quarterback in Sam Darnold, are favored by 5.5 points at home against the Jets. This game has many exciting storylines that you usually don’t see in interconference play.

The Jets elected to move on from Sam Darnold in the offseason and draft rookie Quarterback Zach Wilson. So is it going to be a Darnold revenge game against his former team, or will the Jets be proven right for moving on?

New York Jets Odds & Overview

The Jets have the fourth-worst Super Bowl odds at (+15000), so expectations are reasonably low for the rookie head coach and QB duo. While they are still a long way away from the Lombardi Trophy, there’s no denying that this is a much-improved roster than the 2-14 version last season.

In the draft, Joe Douglas went heavy offense using his first four picks on a Quarterback, interior offensive lineman, wide receiver, and running back in that order. Their goal is not to repeat the same mistakes they did with the QB who is now on the other sideline in Sam Darnold.

Carolina Panthers Odds & Overview

The Panthers are in a similar situation to the New York Jets, they have a new Quarterback who has a lot to prove, and the oddsmakers are looking at 2021 as a building year for them with their (+9000) Super Bowl odds.

A more significant impact than the Sam Darnold trade might be the return of Christian McCaffrey. CMC played in just three games last year, but the last time he was healthy in 2019, he had 2,392 yards from scrimmage and a combined 19 TD’s.

When on the field, there’s no better dual threat in the league, and the Jets will have their hands full trying to contain him in both the ground game and passing attack.

New York Jets vs. Carolina Panthers Prediction and Betting Preview

Sam Darnold clearly has a lot to prove. After being the third overall pick just three years ago, he finds himself on a new team.

With Darnold’s starting Right-Guard, John Miller, out with COVID-19, will the offensive line give him enough time to throw? Dennis Daley is projected to start at RG. Daley is a 2019 sixth-rounder who has only 12 starts in two years under his belt. At the same time, Pat Elflein holds down the other guard spot and was rated 73rd out of 80 qualifying guards by PFF.

The line of 5.5 seems too large for a team who went just 5-11 last year, not to mention the Quarterback who has significant question marks with a banged-up offensive line in front of him. Last year, Carolina was 1-3 ATS as a favorite, and all three losses were when they were home favorites.

NFL Pick: Jets +5.5
