First NFL Head Coach to Be Fired Odds Update: Mike Zimmer Is on the Hot Seat
We have reached the halfway point of the 2021 NFL season. We've yet to see a head coach be fired but there are a few that are certainly heading in that direction. The winless Lions come to mind as their rookie head coach, Dan Campbell has still not gotten his first win. He doesn't even make the odds though. The oddsmakers though have a longtime veteran head coach at the top of the odds grid to be the first head coach fired in 2021.
The Minnesota Vikings may be the unluckiest team in the NFL. They’ve played one of the most vigorous schedules in the NFL, and all of their losses have come by one score. At the end of the day, though, Mike Zimmer has a team that should be contending for the playoffs at 3-5. The Vikings schedule won't get any more forgiving either. As a result, oddsmakers believe that he could be the first coach fired this season.
Zimmer is given +160 odds, or an implied 38.5% chance to be the first coach fired this year. He barely edges out NFC North rival Matt Nagy, who’s given +200 odds or an implied 33.3% chance to be the first coach fired.
The next best odds for the head coach of a team expected to compete for a playoff spot belong to Vic Fangio. The Broncos head coach is given +2000 odds or a 4.8% chance of being fired. Surprisingly, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores is given +2500 odds, or an implied 3.8% chance to be the first coach fired.
Mike Zimmer’s seat is red hot, and things aren’t going to get easier for him. The Vikings next three games are on the road against the Chargers, a home game against the Packers, and then on the road against the 49ers. If the Vikings go 1-2 or 0-3 in those games, it’s hard not to see Zimmer’s tenure in Minnesota coming to an end.
