Los Angeles Chargers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Week 11 SNF Betting Odds, Expert Picks, and Preview

An intriguing Sunday Night Football clash is on tap for Week 11 as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers will conclude a full NFL Sunday slate of games. Both sides come in with five wins on the year and are very much in the AFC playoff mix. While the NFL betting odds for this game suggest a close contest, the availability of one key player could trigger a big line move before kickoff of this Steelers vs Chargers matchup.

Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

Despite limited expectations coming into the season, the Steelers actually enter Week 11 just a half-game back of the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North Division. That half-game difference is the result of Pittsburgh tying the winless Detroit Lions last week. It was not a pretty performance by any means for the Steelers. However, they were without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger due to a certain virus. In his place, Mason Rudolph was far from spectacular. Roethlisberger’s availability for Sunday’s NFL betting matchup against the Chargers has yet to be confirmed. The line will likely swell in the Chargers’ direction if he is forced to miss the game.

The Steelers were also without wideout Chase Claypool in last week’s tie. That blow only further thinned out a receiving corps that has already lost JuJu Smith-Schuster for the season. Claypool has been limited in practice so far this week and will look to make it back to work alongside Diontae Johnson. Rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth has picked up the slack in the passing game over the middle since Smith-Schuster’s injury. Unfortunately, no matter who plays quarterback for the Steelers on Sunday, a one-dimensional passing offense is not likely to fare well against the stiff Chargers’ pass defense. The onus will be on the offensive line to step up and open lanes for Najee Harris.

Los Angeles Chargers Preview

It was only one month ago that Brandon Staley was the NFL betting favorite to win Coach of the Year in his first season leading the Chargers. L.A. has lost three of four games played since and the hype around Staley has cooled off as a result. After squeaking past the Philadelphia Eagles on the road two weeks ago, the chargers suffered a disappointing home loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. Justin Herbert had another ugly game, finishing under 200 yards passing and throwing another interception, his fourth in the last four games. The Chargers also struggled to get the run game going against Minnesota. Austin Ekeler finished with just 44 yards in the loss.

As the season has gone on, opposing teams have figured out that the way to attack the Chargers’ defense is by running the ball. Los Angeles ranks seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency against the pass but is dead last when it comes to defending the run. This Sunday sets up as an interesting matchup between a Chargers defense that can’t stop the run against a Steelers offense that has struggled to run the ball all season behind a poor offensive line.

The unclarified availability of Ben Roethlisberger has sent the odds for this SNF matchup into a frenzy. At the time of writing, Big Ben is preparing as though he is going to play on Sunday night. However, he has yet to clear the league’s protocols in order to be eligible to do so. It’s no surprise that the NFL betting market has reacted to the uncertainty on the Steelers side by backing the Chargers. 67% of spread tickets were on the home team along with an overwhelming 97% of the money.

The total for this game has also seen plenty of fluctuation throughout the week. A line that previously was as high as 50.5 has plummeted to 47 at most sportsbooks.

Steelers vs. Chargers Betting Picks and Prediction

Based on the most recent line moves, it would appear that there is a real concern amongst the NFL betting community and bookmakers that Ben Roethlisberger will not play in this Sunday night tilt. If that is the case, the Steelers become nearly impossible to bet on ATS. The fact that Mason Rudolph could do no better than tie the Lions doesn’t bode well for his chances against a more competent team with playoff aspirations.

If Roethlisberger is ruled out, the preferred betting angle for this game would likely be to play under the total. The Steelers are simply not built to exploit the Chargers’ inability to stop the run defensively. Meanwhile, Justin Herbert and the Bolts’ offense have come crashing back down to Earth after a hot start to the year. Piling up points on the Steelers’ defense is never easy. This may wind up being a much lower-scoring game than some might have anticipated just a few weeks ago.

Steelers vs Chargers NFL Betting Picks: Under 47 (-110)
