Washington Football Team vs Philadelphia Eagles Odds, Betting Preview and Predictions

The Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles face off on Tuesday, all the while hoping the schedule change will not impact their pivotal NFC East showdown. To put it simply, it’s a must-win game for both as they chase one of the three wildcard spots in the NFC.

Both Washington and Philadelphia are level on a 6-7-0 record. However, with the former banged up and coming off a loss and the latter coming off a winning performance and a late-season bye, the markets are decidedly skewed in favor of the Eagles.

Washington Football Team Betting Preview

Ron Riviera can’t seem to catch a break this season. From losing starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 1 to defensive end Chase Young mid-season, amongst several others, he’s dealt with one challenge after another. Most recently, the team has seen over a dozen players hit the Covid-19 reserve list, including starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke and backup quarterback Kyler Allen. To say that’s a bad recipe ahead of an important game is an understatement.

The Football Team lost to the Dallas Cowboys 27-20 in the nation’s capital. The disappointing loss snapped an auspicious run of four straight wins that elevated Washington back into the NFC mix and, somewhat unexpectedly, into contention for the NFC East crown.

In the space of a week, the Football Team’s prospects went from promising to dire indeed. How they rebound from the loss and the covid-19 outbreak is anybody’s guess. The status of Heinicke and Allen is up in the air, and it won’t be certain whether either is available until close to kick-off. Washington added free agent Garrett Gilbert to its roster as insurance for a worst-case scenario which will see them without their top two quarterbacks on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, roster challenges include Curtis Samuel (hamstring), Terry McLaurin (concussion), and Brandon Scherff (ankle) – all of which are listed as questionable. It’s not all bad news though. Montez Sweat is coming off IR and the Covid-19 reserve list while Jonathan Allen cleared health protocols to return. Both could be available for Tuesday’s game, which would bolster Washington’s defense. Nevertheless, it’s still going to be a tough ask for Washington as indicated by the odds for this game.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Preview

Has coach Nick Sirianni discovered he has two able starting quarterbacks on his roster with Jalen Hurts and Gardiner Minshew? That depends on how much stock one puts into a win over the hapless Jets.

The Moustache replaced an injured Hurts a fortnight ago and led the Eagles to a comprehensive 33-18 victory over the Jets. It marked Philadelphia’s third win in the last four games and resurrected their chances to compete for a wildcard spot.

The Eagles certainly went into the much-needed late-season bye on a high. Minshew capitalized on his opportunity to showcase his wares by going 20 of 25 passing for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He practically looked elite. Then again, playing the Jets can do that.

It’s impossible to evaluate Minshew’s performance solely on that one game. Put it another way, he doesn’t appear to have won the job over Hurts. Reports suggest Hurts, who was dealing with a high ankle sprain, is set to start on Tuesday. The Eagles have found success in the rushing game this season, so the return of the team’s lead rusher is a welcome sign.

Understandably, it’s been a volatile market for this game. Lookahead lines projected the Eagles at -3, but when news of the covid-19 outbreak broke, the odds came off the board promptly. Books reopened the game at the weekend with the line oscillating between -7 and -8.5 depending on the market operator. As of the time of writing (Monday), the line has dropped down to Eagles -6.5.

Washington vs Philadelphia Prediction and Picks

At the face of it, this is a clash of two 6-7 SU teams, but at the crux of the matchup, it’s anything but a level playing field. Hence, the odds are skewed in favor of the Eagles across the board.

Certainly, Philadelphia is widely expected to win at home and, potentially even, cover the point spread. That said, it’s worth noting that the Eagles have lost all but one home game this season – the lone 40-29 victory came against a banged-up New Orleans Saints side on November 21. The Eagles are 1-4 SU at home, which is hardly a ringing endorsement of their odds.

It might be the case that Washington is facing insurmountable obstacles and they’re ripe for the taking. But sometimes adversity works contrary to expectations. The Football Team have shown fight and spirit throughout their 2021 campaign. Expect nothing less. Washington’s chances will be greatly improved if either Heinicke or Allen gets the nod on Tuesday.

The Eagles have all the advantages in this game and, in theory, therefore, they should win. But can they be trusted enough to come through in the betting? Their losing home record is a concern that’s tough to shake. Assuming Washington will put its best possible foot forward by having one of its top two starters wielding the offense, Washington to cover as the 6.5-point road dogs is quite the tempting NFL pick. But don’t go betting the farm on it.

Pick: Washington +6.5
