British Open Odds: Jordan Spieth Favored to Win After Going Low in Round 1

I think we can stop asking if Jordan Spieth is back, especially after what he did in the opening round of the 2021 British Open on Thursday.

Jordan Spieth has been playing some of the best golf of his career at late, and that continued during the first round of the British Open at Royal St. George’s. Spieth shot 5-under par and went into the clubhouse tied for the lead following his first 18 holes.

This continues an absolutely scorching hot pace that Jordan Spieth has been on since about February of this year. Spieth has finished within the top 30 in each of his last seven events he’s played, including a win at the Valero Texas Open and a second place finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Jordan Spieth was up to his old tricks during Thursday’s first round of the British Open, and both oddsmakers and bettors are all over him as a potential winner. He is now the favorite to win the British Open, and one of the most popular picks among bettors today.

British Open Odds: Jordan Spieth Favored to win British Open

Oddsmakers were expecting a good showing from Jordan Spieth at the British Open, but I’m not sure they envisioned the former British Open champion coming out this hot. Spieth came into Thursday’s first round at +1800 to win. Odds that implied a 5.3% chance he would do so.

Now, following his five-under start to the 20201 British Open, those odds are long gone. Right now, the best odds you can get on Spieth to win the British Open sit at +550. At +550, his implied probability of winning is 15.4%, almost three times more than prior to the tournament.

British Open Odds as of 9:30 am ET

Jordan Spieth +550

Louis Oosthuizen +850

Brooks Koepka +2200

Dustin Johnson +2200

Rory Mcilroy +2200

British Open Betting

The oddsmakers aren’t the only ones excited by the prospect of Jordan Spieth potentially winning another British Open. The betting public is also running to the window to bet him following his fast start.

Since the start of the tournament. Spieth is the third most backed option in the field. The most backed golfer since the start of Thursday’s British Open Round 1 is the favorite, Jon Rahm, with 6.66% of bets backing him. Rahm shot a 1-over par on the day and his odds ballooned, so it’s fairly common to see people taking advantage of that.

The second most backed golfer in this time span is the only golfer to go lower than Spieth on Thursday, Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen has been backed by 5.8% of bettors while 5.67% of bettors are backing Spieth, the new favorite, to win.
