Masters Top 5 Odds: Will Dustin Johnson Bounce Back at Augusta?

With the Masters being golf’s only Major played at the same venue every year, bettors can more easily track the history of the tournament and the statistics necessary for golfers to do well. Between driving accuracy, driving distance, greens in regulation, scrambling, and putting average, the last 15 Masters winners have all finished in the top 27 of each category. While length off the tee is something you will hear as required of the potential winner all week, 12 of the last 15 Masters winners have finished seventh or better in greens in regulation, so that could be argued as the more relevant statistic.

Many sportsbooks offer a wide range of markets for golf tournaments, like top-10, top-20, top-30, and top-40 finishes. However, we will take a stab at the Masters top 5 odds market and look to cash in on even bigger payouts. Based on the payout structure, one might only need to hit one of these in the Masters top 5 odds market to make their money back for the tournament.

Here are our top bets to end the 2022 Masters with a top-five finish.

Masters Top Five Finish Odds

Dustin Johnson (+400) (Bet $100 to Win $400)

Of those golfers atop the odds list, many will fade Dustin Johnson because of his missed cut at Augusta last year. Those that do are taking too much of a “what have you done for me lately” approach, as Johnson finished first and second the two years prior. Johnson is in great form with a top-four finish at the WGC-Match Play and a ninth-place finish at the Players. Those two results should not be understated given DJ’s poor records in Florida events, with just one win in 34 starts in his career. More than 25% (11-of-40) of his career rounds at Augusta have been sub-70 rounds, and if he can avoid the blowup round like last year, he should find himself in contention on Sunday.

Brooks Koepka (+450) (Bet $100 to Win $450)

We love the guys that missed last year’s Masters cut, don’t we? However, unlike Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka has a better excuse for missing the cut last year, as he had knee surgery one month prior. Thus, like DJ, we are banking on Koepka’s knowledge of the course to be a significant advantage this week, as he has finished 11th or better in his last three Masters outings when healthy.

Viktor Hovland (+450) (Bet $100 to Win $450)

There is so much to like about the young Hovland’s game, and much of it transfers nicely to Augusta, where he won the low amateur title in 2019. Hovland is coming off a T-21 finish last year, rebounding well from a triple-bogey right off the bat in the opening round. Of course, blowup holes will happen at Augusta, especially those involving water, but it is encouraging to see Hovland had the mental fortitude to get past that and turn in a solid week.

Jordan Spieth (+500) (Bet $100 to Win $500)

Talk about horses for the courses. How could we possibly leave Jordan Spieth off of our top-five Masters list? Spieth has finished third or better in five of his last eight Masters starts, so clearly, his game, no matter what form he comes into the tournament, is suited for Augusta. However, it just so happens that Spieth backers can be encouraged by his Valero Texas Open performance, despite the T-35 finish. Per Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf), Spieth gained 7.05 strokes on the field from tee to green in Sunday’s final round, which was his single-best performance in that statistic in seven years. If his putter works better for him than when he finished third last year, he will once again be in contention.

Louis Oosthuizen (+850) (Bet $100 to Win $850)

We could not round out our list without having some version of an “outsider” with longer odds, and what better golfer to get +850 odds with than Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen always seems to show up in majors, and if things had broken a little better for him, we could be looking at his career a lot differently.

After missing the cut in four of his first five Masters starts, Oosthuizen has finished outside the top-40 once in his last eight. In addition, he has finished second a ridiculous six times in majors, even completing the career Grand Slam of second-place finishes at every event. Of all the “longshots” to finish in the top-five at Augusta, give me a golfer with a track record like Oosthuizen has.
