Last month’s announcement from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman began to paint a picture of exactly how the remainder of the season would look.
The regular season is officially over, and with that comes a 24-team playoff that will begin no earlier than July 1.
Immediately following his announcement, bettors rushed to back their favorite team or teams that would be making a postseason appearance.
So far, the two most popular picks among bettors are the Colorado Avalanche and the Boston Bruins.
According to DraftKings, The Avalanche, who finished the season with 92 points and in second place in the West, are the most popular bet, with 15% of action on them to win the Stanley Cup.
The Bruins have the most points in the NHL and are the second most popular choice, making up 14% of bets.
When play was originally suspended, Colorado’s odds were +1000 but have now shortened to +750.
On the other hand, the Bruins’ odds have drifted from +550 to +650.
While both teams are quite popular among bettors, neither have the most money behind them.
The Washington Capitals (+900) and the Philadelphia Flyers (+1000) both make up 14% of the handle, good for most in the NHL. Only 5% of all bets are on the Capitals to the Cup, while the Flyers are the third most backed team at 12%.
