Since coming into the league it’s hard to dispute anyone has been better than Connor McDavid. The Oilers’ star has taken the league by storm and won the Hart Trophy in 2 of his first 6 seasons. Well, oddsmakers believe that McDavid is going to make it 3 in 7.

McDavid is given +225 odds, or an implied 30.8% chance to become the 9th player in NHL history to win 3 Hart Trophies. He has some stiff competition though. Second on the market is Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin, who’s given +375 odds or an implied 21.1% chance to win his 4th Hart Trophy. Not far behind the two favorites are Panthers’ star Jonathan Huberdeau at +400 and McDavid’s teammate Leon Draisaitl at +650.
It's not all forwards on the odds market though. Rangers’ goaltender Igor Shesterkin is given +1800 odds, or an implied 5.3% chance to be the first goalie since Carey Price to win the award. Cale Makar’s odds are significantly worse at +5000, though it’s still a 2% chance to become the first defenseman since Chris Pronger to win the award.
The odds say that there are really 4 leading candidates at the All-Star break. McDavid, Ovechkin, Huberdeau, and Draisaitl. It could all come down to the final standings, with the playoff race playing a large role. If the Panthers win the President’s trophy it’d be hard not to give it to Huberdeau. It’d be hard to give McDavid or Draisaitl the award if the Oilers miss the playoffs. The odds are leaning towards play mattering more than the standings right now, but that’s going to change very quickly.
